The Pistachio: How Exodus Foreshadows St. Joseph
Pistachios, Exodus, and the Hidden Life of St. Joseph
When we think of Christmas, our minds often turn to gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Yet tucked quietly into Scripture is another treasure--humble, green, and full of meaning: the pistachio.
In the Book of Genesis, Jacob sends pistachios and almonds as gifts to Egypt (Gen. 43:11 KJV), a gesture of offering from the land of promise. Later, in Exodus, we see Israel carrying precious fruits and treasures through the wilderness, reminders that even in exile, God’s abundance is never far.
Just as Moses quietly obeyed God’s commands to safeguard Israel, Joseph obeyed the angel’s voice to safeguard the Christ Child.
The pistachio’s green hue whispers of life, renewal, and hope. In this way, it foreshadows Joseph’s role as protector of Christ's mission.
By the time of the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt, pistachios were already a treasured fruit of the region, grown in the fertile lands of the Middle East and carried along trade routes.
It is not difficult to imagine Mary, Joseph, and the Child Jesus receiving hospitality in Egypt, perhaps offered bowls of nuts and fruits familiar to the land. Pistachios, with their hidden shell and vibrant green heart, may well have been among the simple foods that nourished them during their exile.
This possibility adds a tender layer of connection: the same pistachios once sent into Egypt by Jacob could have been tasted centuries later by the Savior Himself, cradled in Joseph’s care. The nut becomes a living thread, linking Exodus, Joseph’s guardianship, and the Incarnation.
Exodus as Journey: Israel’s trek through the desert foreshadows Joseph’s journey into Egypt with Mary and the Infant Jesus. He becomes the new guardian of the covenant, carrying not stone tablets but the Living Word Himself.
Exodus as Hidden Provision: In the wilderness, God provided manna and water from the rock. In Joseph’s hidden life, God provided safety, shelter, and daily bread through his labor.
Exodus as Protection: The pillar of cloud and fire shielded Israel. Joseph’s quiet presence shrouded the Holy Family with protection.
